SHMC Cardiac Service
Framingham Risk Assessment
This tool utilizes a calculation, based on your age, gender and
other factors to determine your risk of heart attack or heart related
death within the next 10 years.
You will need to know your total and HDL cholesterol levels,
as well as your systolic blood pressure (the top number). If you
don’t have this information, the Women’s Health Center
offers cholesterol testing for a nominal fee, and blood pressure
checks are always free!
Your Framingham score provides a valuable
tool for both you and your health care provider to evaluate your
risk of developing serious cardiac problems in the near future.
Even if your score is low, you may have
risk factors that actively contribute to the development of cholesterol
blockage in your arteries. Positive lifestyle changes can markedly
reduce your risk. The earlier in life you adopt a healthy lifestyle,
the greater the likelihood that you will prevent your own heart
disease!
