SHMC Cardiac Service
Passionate about addressing the problem of cardiovascular disease
in women, the Sacred Heart Women’s Health Center, in conjunction
with the Medical Center’s renowned Cardiac Services, has
developed Heart-to-Heart, a program specifically designed for women.
At the “heart” of this program is the opportunity for
you to have a health assessment to determine your risk for cardiovascular
disease.
The Heart-to-Heart assessment is a three-part process
Discuss your unique health history
- Shortly after
you call to make an appointment, you will receive the HeartCalc
Cardiac Risk Assessment to complete and return prior to your
scheduled appointment. This helps you recognize areas in your
life that may contribute to a higher risk of heart disease
and stroke.
Undergo screenings and tests
This occurs at your first visit and takes approximately one hour.
You need to fast at least 12 hours before these tests, which include:
- lipid (cholesterol) profile that includes HDL, LDL
and triglyceride levels;
- glucose (blood sugar) test to detect possible diabetes;
- blood pressure check;
- a fitness evaluation.
Review your results. You will:
- have a thorough one-on-one consultation with nurse
experts;
- review your computerized HeartCalc risk profile;
- receive useful recommendations to help you reduce
areas of risk identified for you and educational handouts to
help you follow through on recommendations;
- discuss nutritional strategies and take home recipes;
and
- receive referrals, as necessary, to nutritionists,
counselors, exercise physiologists, cardiologists and other health
care providers.
Call the Women’s Health Center to schedule your Heart-to-Heart
risk assessment. Office hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30
p.m. Cost for the assessment, including your health history and
nurse consultation, is $60. For details or an appointment, call
474-2400 or toll free 877-474-2400.
- Men included! The Women’s Health Center offers
cardiovascular screenings for men, too.
- Don’t forget: you’ll want to discuss your
risk for heart disease with your regular primary care physician
as well!
