as breast/ovarian and colon cancer at an early age.

concerned about a family history of adult onset diseases such
as Huntington disease, polycystic kidney disease or early onset
Alzheimer disease.
- Couples

mental retardation, a birth defect, unusual features or other
known genetic disorders (e.g. cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia,
muscular dystrophy)
- Couples
with a family history of birth defects or inherited diseases.
- Pregnant
women who have concerns arising from abnormal results of testing
performed during pregnancy (e.g. blood tests or ultrasound exams).

with a history of three or more miscarriages, or who have had
an unexplained stillbirth.

What is a genetic consultation?
The objective of a genetic consultation is to help the patient/family
understand the contribution of heredity to a specific medical condition,
to understand recurrence risks and to understand the options available
to them that are compatible with their family's goals, values and
beliefs.
It is the role of the genetic counselor and medical geneticist to
interpret scientific information in a practical and understandable
manner for patients and their families.
What to expect during a consultation:
The patient meets with a genetic counselor and/or a medical geneticist.
These individuals work as a team and have specialized training in
medical genetics. The genetics team will discuss family history
and will frequently request medical records to review.
If appropriate, a physical examination will be performed and laboratory
tests may be ordered
The genetics team will translate medical information in order to
assist families in understanding the information presented to them.
The goal is to assist families in making decisions that are best
for them, and consistent with their beliefs.
Who can arrange for a genetic consultation?
- Physician
- Patient
- Family
member
- Any
health care agency or clinic
Prior
to an appointment, the genetics clinic may request relevant medical
records.
Will my medical insurance cover a consultation?
In most cases, genetic consultation is covered by the patient's
insurance.
- A
referral from a primary care physician may be required in order
to ensure payment for a visit.
- A
sliding fee scale is available for patients without insurance.
- A
payment plan is available for patients who are not eligible for
the sliding fee scale.
